In Memoriam: James “Jimmy” Florakis

Nov 02 2019

James "Jimmy" Florakis passed away on October 31, 2019. He worked for nearly 50 years at Columbia University and for more than 30 years with the APAM Department as the supervisor of both the Applied Physics and Medical Physics teaching labs.

Prof. Gerald Navratil commented, "Hiring Jimmy was one of the best choices I’ve ever made, as he was instrumental in setting up our new teaching laboratory, maintaining it for decades, and helping to train many generations of undergraduates and graduate students. Even after his retirement, he came back for several years to continue his valuable work in the laboratory. His ready smile and always upbeat 'can-do' attitude made him a pleasure to work with, and I know he will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him."
